Houston, TX — September 4, 2025 A 38-year-old man who had just moved to Houston in search of work was fatally shot Thursday morning at the InTown Suites on Kuykendahl Drive. Authorities have identified the victim as Antoine Jermaine Lax, born April 1, 1987, in South Bend, Indiana.
According to Houston police, Lax had checked into the extended stay hotel on September 1 and was living in room 213. Investigators say that around 6:00 a.m. Thursday, as Lax returned to his room, he was shot multiple times in the back by Jeremy Davidson, who resided next door in room 212.
Lax was pronounced dead at 6:03 a.m.
Police say the two men had been involved in an argument the previous day. Detectives reported finding no weapons inside Lax’s room, while two firearms were recovered from Davidson’s.
Davidson has since been taken into custody and is currently being held at the Harris County Jail on a $500,000 bond, charged with murder.
Lax’s girlfriend, Bridget Johnson, told reporters she was not allowed to stay with him in the room since the hotel reservation was under his name. She said the couple had come to Houston after she scheduled a job interview, a move that prompted Lax to relocate quickly.
His mother, Minister Crystal Lashelle Lax, expressed grief and concern following her son’s death.
“My son was trying to start fresh in Houston, and now he’s gone,” she said.
“I just pray there’s no foul play with insurance policies or anything like that. He didn’t deserve this.”
The family also reports that Antoine’s personal property remains inside his hotel room at the InTown Suites and is seeking assistance to secure and retrieve his belongings.
Loved ones are asking for community support to help cover the costs of Antoine Lax’s memorial service, which will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana. Donations can be made through CashApp at $JCMOUTREACH.
The Texas Daily News initially reported the case as an “unidentified person shot,” but family members have since confirmed Lax’s identity.
The investigation remains ongoing as Houston homicide detectives work to determine the motive behind the killing.
