JESUS IS YOUR KINSMAN'S REMEDEER
TO CLAIM HIS FAMILY BACK FROM CAPTIVITY
A kinsman redeemer (go'el) was a close relative in ancient Israelite culture (Leviticus 25) tasked with rescuing family members from poverty, slavery, or the loss of inherited land.
While the Year of Jubilee (every 50 years) automatically restored land to original owners, a kinsman could redeem land before that time to restore a family member’s inheritance immediately.
Key Aspects of the Kinsman Redeemer:
Family Obligation: The redeemer had to be a near relative (brother, uncle, cousin, etc.).
Redeeming Land: If a family member was forced to sell their land due to poverty, the kinsman would buy it back to keep it within the family clan.
Redeeming People: If a relative sold themselves into slavery, the kinsman was required to pay the redemption price to set them free.
Levitate Marriage: If a man died without heirs, the kinsman was to marry the widow to raise descendants in the deceased person's name (Deuteronomy 25:5-6), as seen with Boaz and Ruth.
The 7th Year/Jubilee Connection: While debts were cancelled and slaves were released every 7th year (Shemitah/Sabbath year), the formal return of land and full restoration of family property specifically happened during the Year of Jubilee (50th year).
